The circadian rhythm
The circadian rhythm is the body's internal clock mechanism. It regulates when we wake up, when we experience focus, and when recovery can take place. This rhythm is not controlled by time, but by light.
For centuries, this was a matter of course. The sun determined the pace of the day. The body followed effortlessly. In the modern world, this has changed. We wake up without daylight, work under artificial light, and in the evening our eyes remain exposed to stimuli that the body interprets as daytime. The result is not immediate illness, but a subtle disruption.
For centuries, spiritual traditions have spoken about living in rhythm. About going with natural cycles instead of against them. Not as a belief, but as an observation. When that communication is disrupted, a distance arises between what we do and what we really need.
Why does rest sometimes no longer feel like recovery?
Rest is stagnation. Recovery is integration. Recovery means that the body processes events, stimuli, and tension. That requires internal space. When the nervous system is activated for a long time, that processing does not take place, even when someone is not physically doing anything. This creates a strange feeling of emptiness after rest. As if relaxation does not fill you up, but exhausts you.
What if recovery doesn't start in bed?
Recovery is not a moment. It is a transition. The body must be able to gradually let go of what was necessary to function during the day. That process does not begin when you lie down, but when the stimuli diminish. When the light softens. When the pace slows down. When attention is allowed to turn inward.
Is all light the same for your body?
For the body, light is not decoration. It is direction. It tells us when to open and when to close. When energy can flow outwards and when it can return inwards. As a result, modern humans often live in a state of limbo. Not fully active, not fully at rest. The body lives in an extended twilight zone.
Remembering instead of optimizing
Much of modern health focuses on improvement. Getting better. Optimizing. Controlling. But some forms of balance do not require improvement. They require remembrance. Remembrance of rhythm. Of simplicity. Of natural intelligence.
In spiritual traditions, this is seen as a return to alignment. Not as an achievement, but as coming home. Health arises where the body feels heard. Where rhythm becomes the guide again, rather than willpower.
